Lezing uit het Boek Jesaja Jes. 55, 10-11

Lezing uit het heilig Evangelie volgens Mattheüs. Mt. 13, 1-23 of 1-9
In deze parabel zijn er twee dingen die belangrijk zijn: dat zijn de grond en het zaad. Iedere mens heeft van nature een gelovig aanvoelen. De gelovige mens zegt: Ik geloof in God de almachtige Vader, en de rest van de geloofsbelijdenis met als het doel: Ik geloof in de verrijzenis van het lichaam en het eeuwig leven. Als dat er niet zou zijn, dan zou al het bovenstaand uitgesproken geloof nutteloos zijn.
De ongelovige zegt: “Ik geloof dat er niets is”. Ook dat is geloof. Hij gelooft want hij kan niet bewijzen dat er geen God zou zijn. Ik zou eens een atheïst, iemand die zegt dat er geen God is, een geweldig diner willen voorzetten, met de heerlijkste gerechten en mooiste wijnen en dan willen vragen: geloven je dat er een kok bestaat en een wijnbouwer? Het ongeloof is een leeg geloof, het is de waarheid niet willen erkennen.
Om tot geloof te komen, moet het geloof verteld en verkondigd worden. Het geloof komt door te luisteren naar de verkondiging. Het geloof komt vanuit het gehoor. Het is door taal, door het woord dat tot ons gesproken wordt, dat we tot geloof komen. Over dat woord van de verkondiging heeft Jezus het; en over de mate dat wij ernaar luisteren.
Het woord van God is als een zaad. Dat zaad van God is goed, daaraan ligt het niet. Een zaad heeft kiemkracht in zichzelf. In deze parabel zegt Jezus dat het woord van God een levend woord is. Als zaad in goede grond valt, kan het ontkiemen en veel vrucht dragen. Zo zal het woord van God dat in een open en ontvankelijk hart wordt opgenomen, dat is de goede grond, ook ontkiemen, tot groei komen en veel vrucht dragen.
Jezus vertelt in de parabel dat er veel zaad verloren gaat en geen vrucht voortbrengt. Dat is triest. Het is ook onze ervaring. We hebben het geloof van onze ouders door de Kerk gekregen, en veel zaad is niet opgekomen. Katholieke huwelijken zijn er niet meer, ook katholieke uitvaarten behoren tot het verleden. Veel zaad is dus niet in goede grond gevallen. Maar een boer die een slechte oogst heeft gehad, gaat het volgende jaar toch weer het land bewerken en zaaien, hopende dat er dan wel op een goede oogst op volgt. Zo doen we dat ook in de Kerk.
Het zaad is het Woord van God. Dat woord van God is Jezus Christus! Jezus Christus moet verkondigd worden. Hij is de inhoud en het doel van ons geloof. Hoe vaak praten wij met elkaar over Jezus Christus? Is het vreemd dat als wij niet over Jezus Christus praten, mensen niet gelovig worden, of juist ongelovig worden? Waarom praten wij niet over Jezus Christus? Is Jezus Christus voor ons een vreemde? Waarom is Jezus Christus voor ons een vreemde? Is het niet omdat wij niet de tijd nemen om naar Hem te luisteren?
Want als wij naar Hem luisteren, zal Hij door het Woord dat Hij is, in ons opbloeien, zal Hij ons tot handelen en spreken aanzetten. Dan gaat ook de profetie uit de eerste lezing va Jesaja in vervulling. De regen die uit de hemel neerdaalt keert naar de hemel terug als het de planten heeft doen groeien met zaadvormende gewassen.
Als Jezus, die het Woord van de Vader is, bezit neemt van ons hart, als ons hart goede grond is, dan brengt Hij ons tot de Vader terug in gebed, lofprijzing en dankzegging. Dan staan wij niet leeg en stom voor zijn aangezicht. We moeten daarom de tijd nemen, net zoals wij de tijd nemen om eten te bereiden en te nuttigen, zo moeten wij ook de tijd nemen om te luisteren naar het Woord van God, om dat zaad in ons te kunnen laten ontkiemen. Dan dragen wij vrucht van het geloof en dat is weldadig, namelijk dertig, zestig en honderdvoudig. Als wij de tijd en de rust er niet voor nemen, dan zijn wij geen goede grond en gaat veel zaad verloren en hebben wij ook niets te beleven en te verkondigen.
Jezus zegt het ook heel duidelijk: “Aan u is het gegeven de geheimen van het koninkrijk te kennen”. Wat is dat geheim van het koninkrijk? Dat is Jezus Christus. En ook zegt Jezus: “Vele profeten en rechtvaardigen hebben verlangd te zien wat gij ziet, en zij hebben het niet gezien;
en te horen wat gij hoort, en zij hebben het niet gehoord”. Wat verlangden zij te zien en te horen? Jezus Christus!
Wat zijn wij dus gezegend en begenadigd dat wij Jezus Christus mogen kennen. Maar wij kennen Hem pas echt wanneer Hij tot ons spreekt in ons hart en dat Hij ons tot bidden aanzet. Anders blijft Hij als een buurman die wij spreken en kennen van over de schutting en verder niet. Dan blijft Jezus buiten ons en komt Hij niet in ons.
Maria nam het Woord van God op in haar hart en daarom kwam het Woord ook in haar schoot. Zij luisterde naar het Woord en door het Woord jubelde zij uit van vreugde en prees God lof in het Magnificat. Zo keerde het Woord van God door Maria in dankzegging en lofprijzing tot de Vader terug. Moge het ook zo met ons zijn. Heilige Maagd Maria, OLV ter Eijk, bid voor ons. Amen.

In this parable, there are two things that are important: the soil and the seed. Every person has a natural sense of faith. The believing person says: I believe in God the Father Almighty, and the rest of the creed with the aim of believing in the resurrection of the body and eternal life. If that were not there, then all the above expressed beliefs would be useless.
The unbeliever says, "I believe there is nothing." That too is faith. He believes because he cannot prove that there would be no God. I would like to serve an atheist, someone who says that there is no God, a gourmet dinner, with the most delicious dishes and most beautiful wines, and then ask: do you believe that there is a cook and a winegrower? Unbelief is an empty faith, it is not wanting to acknowledge the truth.
In order to come to faith, faith must be told and proclaimed. Faith comes by listening to the preaching. Faith comes from hearing. It is through language, through the word spoken to us, that we come to faith. Jesus is talking about that word of the proclamation; and about the extent to which we listen to it.
The word of God is like a seed. That seed of God is good, that's not the problem. A seed has germination capacity in itself. In this parable, Jesus says that the word of God is a living word. When seed falls into good soil, it can germinate and bear a lot of fruit. In this way, the word of God that is received into an open and receptive heart, that is, the good soil, will also germinate, grow and bear much fruit.
Jesus tells in the parable that a lot of seed is lost and does not produce fruit. That's sad. It is also our experience. We have received the faith of our parents through the Church, and much seed has not come forth. Catholic marriages are no longer there, Catholic funerals are also a thing of the past. So a lot of seed has not fallen into good soil. But a farmer who has had a bad harvest will work and sow the land again the next year, hoping that a good harvest will follow. That's how we do it in the Church too.
The seed is the Word of God. That word of God is Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ must be proclaimed. He is the content and purpose of our faith. How often do we talk to each other about Jesus Christ? Is it strange that if we don't talk about Jesus Christ, people don't become believers, or they don't believe? Why don't we talk about Jesus Christ? Is Jesus Christ a stranger to us? Why is Jesus Christ a stranger to us? Isn't it because we don't take the time to listen to Him?
For if we listen to Him, He will blossom in us through the Word that He is, He will move us to act and speak. Then the prophecy from the first reading of Isaiah will also be fulfilled. The rain that descends from the sky returns to the sky when it has made the plants grow with seed-forming crops.
When Jesus, who is the Word of the Father, takes possession of our hearts, when our hearts are good ground, He brings us back to the Father in prayer, praise and thanksgiving. Then we will not stand empty and dumb before him. We must therefore take the time, just as we take the time to prepare and eat food, so we must also take the time to listen to the Word of God, in order to be able to germinate that seed in us. Then we bear fruit of faith and that is beneficial, namely thirty, sixty and a hundredfold. If we do not take the time and rest for it, then we are not good soil and a lot of seed gets lost and then we have nothing to experience and proclaim.
Jesus also says it very clearly: "To you it is given to know the secrets of the kingdom". What is that secret of the kingdom? That is Jesus Christ! And Jesus also says: "Many prophets and righteous ones have desired to see what you see, and they have not seen it; and to hear what you hear, and they have not heard." What did they desire to see and hear? Jesus Christ!
How blessed and gifted we are to know Jesus Christ. But we only really know Him when He speaks to us in our hearts and He encourages us to pray. Otherwise He remains like a neighbour we know and chat with over the fence and nothing else. Then Jesus remains outside of us and does not come into us.
Mary took the Word of God into her heart and therefore the Word also came into her womb. She listened to the Word and through the Word she shouted with joy and praised God in the Magnificat. Thus the Word of God returned to the Father through Mary in thanksgiving and praise. May it be the same with us. Holy Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Eijk, pray for us. Amen.
